1993: Some dynamic and optimistic investors have come with the idea of an ambitious project regarding an all season’s sports resort: Mzaar 2000. The mountains surrounding Mzaar represent the location of this ski resort [1850m –2465m]. The creation of a main spring of the animation of this village consists in achieving an outstanding complex: 11 luxurious chalets, a five star hotel “InterContinental Mountain Resort & Spa Mzaar Lebanon”, a shopping center of 18 stores, a club, 4 restaurants, a pool, a night club, a balneotherapy center SPA “Les Thermes du Mzaar” and a huge covered parking of 1100 places. The aforementioned elements are interlaced together in order to create the most animated winter sports center in the Middle East [13 chairlifts and 5 ski lifts for 45km of ski runs]. The investors yearned for improving the concept of the biggest European ski resort, in order to create an environment favorable to well-being and comfort. The project has required long months of thinking, a close collaboration with banks, architects, constructors, French well-known decorators and communication specialists.
Faraya-Mzaar is the best equipped and most popular ski resort in Lebanon. It was established in 1957. The equipment consists of 8 grooming machines, 2 of which are for severe slopes, 2 snow plows keep the roads open through-out of the season, in addition to 10 stretchers and 5 snow scooters. A 20 person rescue team, supported by an ambulance for emergency cases, stands by at the ski resort. A doctor and 2 Red Cross units back up the rescue team during weekends and holidays. A ski school of 50 instructors is based next to the ticket-office. Good opportunities for cross-country skiing are available as well as night skiing 4 or 5 times during the season on the Refuge slope. The top of Mzaar ski track, which is at an altitude of 2465m, the highest point reached by the lifts, offers one of the most spectacular views in the country: Bekaa Valley, Mount Hermon, Laqlouq, the Cedars and the coast can all be seen on a clear day.
